What it means

Large language models that run entirely on your own computer or server rather than being accessed through cloud APIs like OpenAI or Anthropic. Offers privacy, no usage limits, and no dependency on external services, but requires powerful hardware and technical setup. Performance historically lagged behind cloud models but is rapidly improving.

How it's used here

Members running Open Claw and custom agent setups often use local models for certain tasks or as fallbacks. Discussed in context of whether they'll eventually match cloud models in quality. Particularly relevant for Docker-based agent systems that can keep running even if cloud gateways go down.

Seen in the wild

  • The speed (grok bot) is impressive overall and feels close to local models in response and action times, light years faster than cc/codex lol

  • I guess it will make sense though when local models would be as good as Sota models or there will be not much of a evolution going forward
  • Clawdbot in dockers are way more useful.. even if the gateway stops the dockers don’t stop and continue working if setup with local models
